This Jazz Era Lawn Party won't end! While enjoying ourselves, Noah Rabinowitz noticed the amazing Bill Cunningham, who has shot fashion for the NY Times for close to half a century, taking photos of the festivites. Watching this 82 year old photo legend work was truly a pleasure. My friend Ramsay de Give pointed me to this video... 52 secs in is our gang.

Recently I had the honor to spend some time with Sister Alberta Sheridan, a 94 year old sister who has been a part of an Alzheimer study for 20 years now. She and a group of other sister's have participated in David Snowdon's study of determining why some people get Alzheimer's and some don't. Dr. Snowdon thought the Nun's were a good choice due to their pure lifestyle. Anyway you can check out more about the study and the book here and the NPR short slideshow that I shot here (A wealth of information about the study is on the NPR link I gave)

New Years Eve... the last night of decadence before we do it again tomorrow.

New Years Eve is a day I usually refer to as "amateur night" as well as St. Patrick's Day. I refer to these "holidays" "event extravaganzas" as amateur nights cuz usually everybody and their brother will be out and about... drinking. Those who don't usually drink, those who drink entirely way too much, those who are overjoyed... overjoyed meaning those who paint their faces, dress up in full holiday attire, those who creep out of the hole they woke up in, those who have been planning for this night for what feels like their entire life and those who just want to get laid... Once again I was a pawn in my own analogy, although this year I believe I towed the line between amateur and pro more of a seasoned amateur I guess. Anyways, Happy New Year! I wish all you out there in the internet world and beyond the best, let it be (y)our year!

New Cuyama with an old feel

Just the other day my buddy Pete suggested we "go on an adventure" and so we did. Well, depends your definition of adventure but we drove the 33 Highway past Ojai, past Pine Mountain and into New Cuyama which I was to told means "clam." The native Chumash Indians referred to this area, now a town, as "Cuyama" because of all the prehistoric sea shells that scatter the area. Unlike the many prehistoric seashells that scatter this area New Cuyama and the respective Cuyama (Cuyama felt like it was about 50-100 yards long as it was wide, tinier than New Cuyama) are filled with an emptiness, with the exception of the hospitality that was bestowed upon myself and Peter. Both Cuyama towns were established when they found oil under the ground. For awhile Cuyama was booming with oil and so eventually people (workers) settled this area, establishing electricity, running water, a school, restaurants, housing etc. Although booming at one time that oil would eventually slow to a trickle and now Cuyama is a agricultural town, a lot pistachio fields, and seems to be hanging onto what once was. Being from Kansas and having family members who grew up in towns that no longer exist for some reason I was moved, struck by this familiar situation arising again but in California... I have lived here long enough to get past the idea that California is Hollywood and Hollywood is California but still sometimes you forget about the connections and similarities we all share despite being 1500 miles apart from one another.

Anyways, I have no idea why I am transfixed over this excursion and my pictures don't really match up with my sentiments of this town but I guess why these towns and situations effect me be is because its like watching someone you care about or just met slowly fade away; its a paradox of sorts, time standing still but steadily fading away.... And upon further introspection while I am writing this, I realize there maybe a more personal connection or at least a metaphorical connection of this receding town. I just recently spent Christmas with my grandma, Meema as I call her, my mother and brother. I have always had a deep connection with my grandmother my whole life. She was the one who pushed me in my photography and was always in support of my creative side, seems fitting as she is and has known some of the most creative people I have ever met or heard of. She actually knew Jackson Pollocks wife, met Thomas Hart Benton was very close with Arthur Kraft plus many more. A lot of the artwork of the people she met along the way cover the walls of her home. Growing up her home was a place that I spent a majority of my time, herself and the atmosphere at her home fueled my imagination exponentially... Sorry, getting a bit tangential, the connection I believe to be surfacing is this past Christmas was the first time I saw someone who has always been so close to me look as if they are fading away. As I get older these situations are becoming more prevalent, woe is me, but either way there's no hand book which prepares you for these type of situations. New Cuyama and Meema were once booming with life but are now slowly becoming an image of what once was, as much as it hurts me to say that I believe it to be the truth. So no reason to dwell but acknowledging such realities can be a bit jarring and pensive for me to deal with.

Eugene Richards did a great National Geo Story on towns like these in the Dakota's. I suggest anyone who is interested in these ghost towns check out that issue.
